BRAVE Coomera boy Christopher Knight will see in the New Year with a big splash.

And it’s all thanks to the overwhelming generosity of a local pool building company and its contractors and suppliers who have banded together to make the little boy’s dream of having his own pool come true.

Christopher, seven, who was born with two rare life-threatening lung conditions, last week took his first dip in the $20,000 pool donated by Gold Coast Family Pools And Spas owners Martin and Michelle Torrance and their fellow benefactors.

And Christopher’s verdict? “It’s a cool pool.”

Christopher’s mother, Tracey, who has lived on a knife-edge ever since her son was born, said the pool would provide vital exercise therapy and also a new social outlet for her little boy whose ill health meant he led a very isolated life.

Christopher was born with diffuse alveolar damage and interstitial fibrosis, conditions that prevent oxygen from passing through his lungs.

He could not survive without the high concentration of oxygen that is his permanent life support, nightly nasogastric tube feeding and a plethora of drugs and supplements.

Doctors did not believe Christopher would survive when he was born with the rare genetic condition. But he proved them wrong and now he is the only known case in the world to have survived so long.

He desperately needs a double lung transplant, but doctors will not even consider such an operation until he reaches at least 13.

Although he has to fight for every breath Christopher loves life, and, says Tracey, it is his life force and his mental strength that keeps him alive.

However, the extensive use of strong steroid drugs in his treatment has caused the brittle bone disease osteoporosis, which is extremely-painful for him.

Because of his poor health Christopher can attend school only two days a week and must have a carer by his side the whole time.

Until this week playing in a pool was something he could only dream of because of the risk of his picking up an infection in a public pool.

Now, although unable to swim because of the oxygen tubes, he can dc gentle exercises in the sparkling new, the seven metres by four metres Roman-style pool.

“Because his body is supported by the water Chris can move more freely and with less pain than on dry land. said Tracey, who never has a sin g le night’s undisturbed sleep because her son’s lungs have to be suctioned every two to three hours and lines continually checked as he could survive only 15 minutes without his life support.

“He breathes like he’s running a marathon, but I have been told he cannot have any stronger , concentration of oxygen than he is on now and still live at home,” said Tracey.

But despite the tough card he has been dealt Christopher is a smart, chirpy little boy and Tracey has tried to make his life as stimulating as possible.

His mother has made a beautiful home for him and he has pets – a rag doll cat and two gentle little whippets – to play with. And there is always relaxation music playing in the house to help keep him calm and breathing as easily as possible.

Tracey said Christopher’s wish for a pool had first come to light a year ago when a friend, Michelle Deverill, approached a children’s charity on his behalf.

“He only wanted a blow-up pool, but the charity called for quotes for an in-ground pool,” said Tracey.

Martin and Michelle from Gold Coast Family Pools And Spas were among the companies that quoted on the job, but then Tracev was told the charity could not go ahead with the pool.

“Martin and Michelle had said when they quoted that if the project did not proceed, they might be able to help if they could get enough support,” said Tracey. And they lived up to that promise.

Tracey said there were no words that could adequately thank Gold Coast Pools and the other companies and individuals, including Poolsurf, Newman Steel, Gary Burton Plumbing, Custom Pave, Jy Paxton, Robina CAD, Tom and Eli Rapana, Trevor Wilson, Bruce Turley, Steven Delaney, John

Gill, Phil Arnold, and the Pool Doctor, who had helped make the pool a reality.

Michelle Torrance said this was third pool the company had built for a sick child.
“Despite everyone being flat out, everyone we asked to help pitched in, often after work, and it took only five weeks to make it happen,” she said.

“It was a huge effort, especially as it’s such a busy time of year, but I think everyone wanted to help because like us they are all lucky enough to have healthy children.”

Tracey said she could not thank enough all those involved. “It’s opened up a whole new world for Christopher,” she said. “I’m just so grateful.”

Thanking you seems so little in comparison to the kindness and goodwill you have shown our son. Due to the fact that he is wheelchair bound and unable to walk or do anything un-aided – it is very difficult to give him exercise and keep him well. But now that he has his own swimming pool, he can move his limbs freely in the water and not only exercise, which is so beneficial to his muscles and his health, but brings so much fulfillment and happiness into his world.

We wish you and your business the very best for the future and will always remember this wonderful part you played in our son’s life.

With sincere thanks,

Jacob was born with a Congenital CMV infection to the brain.

Meaning sections of the brain had actually calcified and could not develop properly. He was given a 60% chance of survival. At 9 months of age, Jacob was diagnosed with severe spastic Cerebral Palsy, affecting all four of his limbs. Today, Jacob is a beautiful 6 year old , but unlike most little boys his age, Jacob is unable to sit, stand or walk without support.

Although Jacob is unable to speak he manages to communicate with sounds, eye contact and body language. Due to the very high tone that affects Jacobs body, he is unable to eat like we do, and now has a gastroscopy, which is a button in his stomach, through which he is feed by a tube. Jacob also suffers from severe epilepsy, which is mainly triggered off by illness and the heat. Due to Jacob being wheelchair bound, his body lacks exercise and as a result he doesn’t sleep much. He can wake anywhere from 2 – 12 times a night – exhausting everybody!

About 18 months ago Jacob under went an 8 hour operation on both his hips and spent 2 months in a `hip spiker’, covered in plaster from under his arms to his toes. Jacob’s hips had dislocated not only due to his high tone, but from lack of exercise.

Jacob’s ever increasing growth and weight gain is also making it harder to work with him. Therefore, the only safe and affective means of exercise is swimming and hydrotherapy.

This allows Jacob’s body to become weightless and he is easily able to move his limbs freely without pain and stress. The excitement and joy that Jacob shows when swimming and the success he feels when being able to kick his legs and move about, compensates for all the other difficulties he faces on a daily bases.

When given the opportunity to swim regularly, Jacob’s health not only improves, but he manages to sleep through the night and his seizures decrease rapidly. It will also greatly reduce the chance of any more hips problems. To have a pool of our own will not only be a dream come true, but will give Jacob the quality of life he deserves. On behalf of Jacob we can not thank you enough for the extreme kindness and generosity you have shown and we will be forever grateful to you for bringing such joy in to our son’s life.

THANKYOU!
David & Sharon Spedding

BY VALERIE JONES

Christmas has come early for special little Southport girl thanks to a group of generous Gold Coast business people who have played Santa.

The Christmas present they have delivered to five year old Patricia Hoogsteyns is a free $12,000 heated swimming pool…and it will change here life.

Patricia, who was born four months prematurely, weighing only 610 grams and measuring just 30 cm in length has cerebral palsy and also suffers uncontrollable, life-threatening seizures.

She is unable to talk, has to be fed through a stomach tube and may never walk.

Because of her immobility, water therapy is vital to Patricia’s health, helping her to breather, keeping her joints mobile, strengthening her bones and preventing her muscles from wasting.

As they watched their daughter take her first dip in the new pool on Monday, her arms splashing excitedly as she revelled in the freedom the water gave her, Patricia’s parents Cheryl and Patrick could hardly hold back their tears.

Cheryl described the way the pool had materialised in the front garden of their modest Lind Avenue home as nothing short of a miracle.

It all began when they phoned Gold Coast Family Pools owner Martin Torrance to see how much it would cost to put a small fibreglass pool in the house they had just bought.

They hadn’t moved in yet and with Patricia in their arms they met Martin outside the house to explain their requirements.

And meeting Patricia was all that was needed for Martin to decide he wanted to help this family.

As the father of four children, one, Amelia, the same age as Patricia, he was touched by the tough 24-hours a day job her parents has with coping with her severe disabilities.

He got straight on the phone and within a couple of days he was able to give them the news they would have the pool they so desperately needs…and it wouldn’t cost them a cent. Martin, who has been building pools for 15 years, the last five in his own business, decided to call in some favours.

He had already been offered a free pool shell by Flamingo Pools, a prototype they anted to monitor over a three year period.

Instead of selling it at a discount as he’d intended, Martin decided to give it to the Hoogsteyns.

He then asked other suppliers and contractors he had used over the yeas for help and found them as keen as he was to give Patricia a special Christmas present.

“We couldn’t believe it when Martin told me,” said Cheryl

“We had only met him for 10 minutes and all we’d said was we needed it for Patricia’s therapy and explained that using a public pool is too risky because of the feeding tube she has in her stomach.

“Patricia is our only child and I am unable to have any more. She’s very precious to us and we’d do anything for her,” she said.

“But we have never asked for help or played on her disabilities or asked to be treated differently.”

Martin said simply that he’d done it for Patricia.
“I had always thought if I was in a position to be able to help someone then I would. I’ve probably got more out of doing this than I’ve put in,” he said.

Martin said he had been helped by Taylors Excavations, Nucrush Oxenford Quarries, Water Co Pumps, Gaven Electrical, Clearwater Salt Chlorinators, Autumn Solar, PGH Pavers Carrara and Oxenford Paving and Soils which had all given their goods and services free of charge.

He said that thanks to the intervention of Cr Dawn Crichlow, the Gold Coast City Council had even waived its building fees for the pool.

As he watched Patricia in the pool for the first time he said he knew the expression on the little girl’s face would be reward enough for him and the rest of his Santa team.

A gift from the heart…
little Patricia Hoogsteyn enjoys her new pool with her mum, Cheryl, while good samaritan builder Martin Torrance and dad, Patrick, look on
